Star Party!
Karen Herzenberg
Instructional Coordinator
Rio Grande Nature Center State Park
About 70 star gazers showed
up for the first star party at the RGNCSP in some years.
The evening promised thunderstorms, but the sky cleared
up as we got started. This summer, Regional Park Ranger,
Sarah Wood did a special program for our Junior Rangers
on the night sky and taught them to operate a telescope.
They were all invited back to run the telescopes for the
star party and on Saturday, August 11th,
about a dozen of them did so to great acclaim. The young
people focused the scopes on Jupiter and its four
visible moons and used star maps to locate and focus the
scopes on other fascinating objects as well. They also
pointed out constellations to visitors and helped them
use tiny red flashlights to read August star maps. Sarah
set up the “Big Scope” and visitors were able to see
more distant celestial objects such as the Hercules
Cluster and the Ring Nebula. Instructional Coordinator,
Karen Herzenberg and Junior Ranger Intern Teacher,
Melisa Hart assisted Sarah and the Junior Rangers. Watch
the Bosque Tracks calendar for future star parties! |
