TALKS AND TOURS

This year, the Nature Center joins city, state, and federal agencies in celebrating a remarkable achievement: restoration of Cottonwoods, willows, and other bosque natives through the natural process of overbank flooding by the might Rio Grande.
Ten years ago, a westside point bar, choked with Russian olives and other exotics, was scoured clean, lowered two feet, and contoured to allow seasonal flooding.  The river cooperated, helping replant cottonwoods and create a biologically diverse ecosystem not seen elsewhere in the bosque.
Dr. Cliff Crawford introduced audiences to the project in April. Talks and tours the site continue:
Sunday, July 20, 9 a.m.-noon: Tour of the AOP site with restoration biologist Nancy Umbreit. To register, call the Open Space Division, 452-5222.
Sunday, Sept. 7, 1 p.m.: Talk at the Open Space Visitor Center. Call 897-8831.
Saturday, Dept. 20, 9 a.m.-noon: Tour of the AOP site. Call 344-7240 to register.
